Michael Horihan serves as Chief of Police for the City of West Branch. Chief Horihan’s responsibilities are the same as a Patrol Officer, as well as supervising all sworn and non-sworn personnel, and all other administrative and operational aspects of the Department.
Chief Horihan started his police career in 1974 as a Military Policeman with the United States Army. Chief Horihan was stationed at Ft. Gordon, GA; Ft. Riley, KS; Ft. McCoy, WI as well as locations in Germany. Chief Horihan attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and performed the job duties as military police, military police game warden, and as the 1st MP Company Non-Commissioned Officer In-Charge (NCOIC) of the Nuclear, Biological, and Radiological section until his honorable discharge in 1977.
Chief Horihan began his civilian law enforcement career in 1977 when he was hired by the Iowa State Patrol. Chief Horihan graduated the Iowa State Patrol Academy at the end of 1977 becoming a certified Police Officer. While at the Iowa State Patrol, Chief Horihan worked patrol, Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiator, Firearms Instructor, CPR Instructor, Iowa State Patrol Pilot, Iowa State Patrol History Curator, Advanced Accident Investigator, Safety Education Instructor as well as became an Emergency Medical Technician I and volunteered for Belle Plaine Ambulance Service. Chief Horihan retired from the Iowa State Patrol in 2011.
Chief Horihan has served as the Chief of Police since 2011 and specializes in the areas of Safety Education Instructor, Firearms Instructor and Crisis Negotiator Instructor.
John Kory Hanna serves as Police Sergeant for the City of West Branch. Sergeant Hanna’s responsibilities are the same as a Patrol Officer, as well as supervising the subordinate Officer’s and to assume the duties of the Chief of Police in their absence.
Sergeant Hanna started with the West Branch Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 2006. Sergeant Hanna was hired full-time in September 2007 as a Patrol Officer. Sergeant Hanna graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy’s 228th Basic Class receiving the Woodard Award for Highest Scholastic Record. Sergeant Hanna has specialized in the areas of: Standardized Field Sobriety Test Instructor, State of Iowa Reserve Officer General Instructor, ATF Post Blast Investigator, Criminal Intelligence, Advanced Interview and Interrogation Techniques. Sergeant Hanna was promoted from Patrolman/Investigator to Sergeant in June 2012.
Sergeant Hanna is also a member of the West Branch Fire & Rescue Department serving as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician since 2002. Sergeant Hanna also has served nine years in the Iowa Army National Guard, being deployed in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and in 2008 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Combat Medic. Sergeant Hanna is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.
